Route set in Lamjung region- 1 May

The team led by NMA Executive Board Member Mr. Bijay Gurung with Mr. Nawang Nima Sherpa and instructors Mr. Shree Maharjan and Mr. Krishna Gurung as route setters submitted report on the tentative trekking routes recognized in North East of Lamjung, Eastern Lamjung, Dr. Harka Gurung Himchuli peak, Boudha Himal and Phungi Himal Manaslu Area, and Western Lamjung. They left for Lamjung on 24 April 2008 for 25 days program. NMA released fund for this project from Local Development fund with the direction of Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation.

Sagarmatha, Nuptse & Lhotse Climbing Activity Monitoring Committee 2008- May 8

Sagarmatha, Nuptse & Lhotse Climbing Activity Monitoring Committee 2008 formed upon the direction of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation under the convenership of Executive Board Member of NMA Mr. Da Gombu Sherpa, monitored the activities of all the expedition teams at and above the base camp of Mt. Sagarmatha (upto camp II) in order to prevent possible activities intended to disturb the ascent of Olympic torch rally organized by Beijing Olympic 2008. Everest Summiteers' Association, Nepal Mountaineering Instructors' Association, Himalayan Rescue Association and Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal were the members of the committee. Mr. Diwas Pokhrel was deputed as member secretary of the committee, and this was only possible with the coordination of the local community and Nepal Amy. The torched reached at the summit of Everest in the early morning of May 8 and the climbing activities from South side started at 3:00 pm on the same day.

Everest cleaning campaign 2008- May 15

This early program, in the Everest Cleaning Campaign 2008, the remaining parts of the helicopter crashed above the base camp of Mt. Everest were removed with the initiative step taken by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation, NMA and Everest Summiteers' Association. Two engines and a tail piece was brought down and buried in Gorshep. This was an Italian helicopter crashed near camp II in 1974

Ist Death Anniversary of late Pemba Doma Sherpa- 22 May

Ist Death Anniversary program of Late Ms. Pemba Doma Sherpa was organized on 21 May by Everest Summiteers' Association. She lost her life while descending from the summit of Mt. Lhotse on 22 May 2007. She was the first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Sagarmatha from both the north and south faces, and was one of the only six women who have summited Sagarmatha twice.

Apa Sherpa breaks his own record -22 May

NMA Advisor and world famous mountaineer Mr. Apa Sherpa broke his own world record of seventeen times Everest Summiteer by successfully climbing Everest for the eighteen times on 22 May at 5:45 am. He is the member of Eco-Everest Expedition 2008.

First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Expedition 2008-22 May

The five members of First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Expedition 2008- Ms Susmita Maskey, Ms. Pujan Acharya, Ms. Nima Doma Sherpa, Ms. Maya Gurung, Ms. Nawang Phuti Sherpa successfully climbed Mt. Everest on 22 May at 8:30 am. Ms Sailee Basnet, Ms. Asha Kumari Singh, Ms. Usha Bista and Ms. Pema Diki Sherpa successfully ascended Mt. Everest on 24 May at 8:00 am. Finally, Ms. Chunu Shrestha with Mr. Da Gombu Sherpa, General Leader and Executive Board Member of NMA made successful ascent on 26 May at 8:45 am.

First Int'l Sagarmatha Day observed- 29 May

Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) jointly celebrated the First Int'l Int'l Sagarmatha Day on the occasion of completion of 55 years of the ascent of the Mt Everest. Mr. Apa, Sherpa, 18 times Everest Summiteer, was present on the program as the chief guest. Mr. Leela Mani Paudel, Secretary for MoCTCA as also present in the occasion. The chief guest awarded Kumar Khadga Bickram Sahasik Award to Canadian citizen Ms. Meagan McGrath for her courageous effort in rescuing Nepalese mountaineer Ms. Usha Bista at the height of 8300 m on Mt. Everest on 21 May 2007. Likewise, Dawa Norbu Parbatiye Patrakarita Puraskar with a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 was also awarded to senior journalist Mr. Binay Guruacharya for his contribution in the promotion of mountain tourism through media. In the same program, the chief guest conferred Mt. Everest Golden Jubilee Medal to 56 foreign Everest summiteers and 30 Nepalese Everest summiteers. NMA and NTB jointly honored Mr. Apa Sherpa with letter of appreciation for his 18 th times successful ascent on Mt. Everest.

In the program, Secretary of MoCTCA Lilamani Paudel said celebration of the Ist Sagarmatha Day had become a matter of international significance. NMA President Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa said the government's responsibility towards the Sagarmatha region has changed with the changing context due to global warming. Tashi Tenzing Sherpa, the grandson of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first conqueror of Mt Everest, said the government should be more serious to honour the devotion and contribution of the Sherpas to the world's highest peak in making Nepal known to the world. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal conquered the Sagarmatha for the first time and proved that scaling the world's top peak was possible. After the event, it is estimated that more than 3,000 Nepalese and foreigners have scaled Mt Everest till now. With an aim to mark the day, several events are being organized. Among them: Mountain film show, tourism quiz contest, essay competition, scholarship, wall climbing training for students, clean-up programme and Tenzing Hilary Everest marathon.

First Int'l Sagarmatha Day

UAAA Council Meeting - 29 May

On the occasion of the First Sagarmatha Day NMA had welcomed all the foreign guests for the UAAA Council Meeting here in Kathmandu at Radisson Hotel. There were four representing nation. Mr. A.T. Sherpa, President UAAA & NMA presided the chaired the meeting. This year, UAAA Secretariat NMA had the privilege of developing and launching a new website for UAAA http://www.uaaa-asia.org/. After various agenda there was discuss upon the next UAAA General Assembly was decided take place in Iran on 19 October. UAAA delegates & distinguished guests were honoured with a concluding reception & dinner.

Island peak cleaning campaign- 30 May

The team led by Executive Board Member and Convener- Environment Conservation Committee Mr. Deepak Poudyal carried out Island peak cleaning campaign starting from 8 - 25 May. During cleaning campaign, 14 sacks of garbage were collected and disposed at the base camp and 9 sacks of plastic bottle, tin bottle and non-disposable item were handed over to Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee for correct disposal. Similarly, the team also fixed 10 signboards in printed with the message of environmental awareness, and renovated the porter shelter at Lobuje peak.
